Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

At St Clement’s Catholic Primary School, PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. 

Our PSHE curriculum aims to prepare each child for their life in the wider world, both as children and as adults. We look to develop the child as a whole person, able to make their own informed decisions, knowing how their actions can affect others, and how they can keep themselves safe. They will be encouraged to make a valued contribution to the school and society as a whole.

Intent

We believe that PSHE plays a vital part of Primary education and needs to be taught at least weekly. It is taught as an integral part of the Early Years curriculum, the Story project and in Key Stages 1 and 2 through the use of the Kapow curriculum. Lessons will be adapted and developed to ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of individual classes. Lessons may be used for specific eventualities, e.g. child bereavement.  Links are made to other subject areas whenever possible, especially RE, science and computing, to ensure a cross-curricular approach to learning. This reflects our focus on the whole development of the child and how PSHE can impact other subjects.

During the year, children will focus on the five areas of Family and Relationships, Health and Well-being, Safety and the Changing Body, Citizenship and Economic Well-being. Each year group will focus on a different aspect of the topic so that children gain a deeper understanding as they progress through school. 

Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum encourages children to become confident individuals who can make informed decisions about their health, environmental and social issues. It helps to give children the knowledge and skills they need to lead confident, healthy, and independent lives whilst promoting pupil’s health and well-being. Through the Kapow PSHE curriculum, children learn about their own relationships and how these fit in with their communities and the wider world. Our PSHE lessons encapsulate the requirements of the DfE for all schools ‘to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.’

Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE)

Intent

Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is the lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is taught in the context of our Catholic faith. The subject covers the understanding of the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality and sexual health. Our intent for RSHE is to support our parents or carers in the education of their child, recognising that they are the prime educators.  Our teaching reflects the law, including the Equality Act 2010.  We will ensure that RSHE is accessible for all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and/or disability.

Life to the Full Primary – Ten Ten Resources

We use the Diocesan approved Ten:Ten 'Life to the Full' programme from Reception to Year Six. Lessons are taught with a ‘spiral’ approach to learning, in which children will revisit the same topics at an age-appropriate stage throughout their school life. The entire teaching is underpinned by a religious understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God – created, chosen, and loved by God. It is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families.

Parents are informed about the Ten:Ten 'Life to the Full' content every year via the Parent Portal with an opportunity to ask questions about the delivery of the programme.
