Maths

The Mathematics curriculum at St Clement’s Catholic Primary School provides our children with the knowledge, skills and understanding to become fluent and confident mathematical problem solvers. Children are taught to think and reason mathematically, applying skills efficiently and fluently to come to an accurate answer to problems. Mathematics at St Clement’s aims to provide children with an understanding of the world around them and inspire a curiosity and enjoyment of the subject.

What our pupils will learn (intent)

At St Clement’s Catholic Primary School, we use the White Rose Maths schemes of work to deliver the National Curriculum for Mathematics. Please click the links below to download the White Rose Schemes of Learning and progression documents for EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

1-Minute Maths from White Rose: Key Stage 1

We use the 1-Minute Maths app from White Rose to enable our pupils to practise basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills as well as subitising. We encourage parents and carers to use this app at home as well. 1-Minute Maths supports pupils in Key Stage 2 who have gaps in specific number skills and help to improve fluency and confidence.

Times Tables

In Key Stage 2 (and also Year 2) pupils regularly practise times tables to ensure that they are able to recall instantly all the multiplication and division facts for every times table up to 12 x12. We use the Times Tables Rock Stars app to support learning at home and in school.

How the Mathematics Curriculum will be taught to our pupils (implementation)

Pupils are taught in single year groups for Maths throughout the school.

Progression and Assessment

EYFS

Regular observations and assessments are recorded using an on-line journal called Tapestry. This information then contributes to a summative assessment at the end of EYFS using the Early Years Outcomes for Number and Numerical Patterns.

Key Stage 1 and 2

Ongoing assessments take place in each lesson and this informs the planning for the next lesson. There is an emphasis on breaking down the learning into small, achievable steps. End of unit assessments are completed by each child. In the summer term of Year 2, children complete a national Statutory Assessment Test in Mathematics (KS1).

In Year 4, children take a national Multiplication Tables Check in the summer term and in Year 6, children complete national Statutory Assessment Tests in Mathematics (KS2).

Impact

In 2022 83% (17% at Greater Depth) of pupils in Key Stage 1 achieved age related expectations in Maths compared with 76% (22% at Greater Depth) nationally.

In 2022, 84% (44% at Greater Depth) of pupils in Key Stage 2 achieved age related expectations in Maths, compared with 71% (27% at Greater Depth) nationally.
